How to Make a Big Grilled Cheese Sandwich
This is a great recipe if you want to make grilled cheese for more than one or two people in an efficient way. It's a great way to scale up the deliciousness of grilled cheese for a crowd.
One tip is to spread mayo on the outside of your bread. This will help you create a really nice, browned crust on the outside of your bread. As far as bread, you're looking for an unsliced loaf of bread. Pick your favorite bread, whatever that might be, but the best approach is probably to use an unsliced loaf of white bread. |
What you need to make it:
- Unsliced loaf of bread (1, preferably white)
- Mayo (half cup)
- Cheddar cheese (sharp, 6 slices)
- American cheese (8 slices)
- Skim mozzerella cheese (6 slices)
First, get your ingredients together. Now you're going to cut your bread. First, you want to cut so that the end is square-ish. So if you have a tall loaf of bread, you'll want to cut more off the top than if it's already a little more square. For your typical unsliced white bread, this may be about half an inch down. Remember, this is what the end of the bread looks like - at this point you are cutting lengthwise.
After you've shaved the bread down, you're going to cut it in half lengthwise, as you might expect for making a sandwich. Get your oven situation ready by preheating to 350 degrees and put your baking sheet on the middle oven rack.
Take a spoon and dig into the squishy part of the bread along the crust edges, about half an inch deep. Use your fingers to remove this half-inch layer from the bread by pulling it out carefully. This creates room for the cheese. Keep the bread you've scooped out for later.
Cut out parchment paper and put both halves of your bread on the sheet, outside facing up. Spread mayo on the outside of the bread halves only. Be generous with the mayo. Now flip both halves over.
Now you're going to place the slices of cheese down into the (partially scooped out) bread. Layer in the order of your choice, but consider doing American, then cheddar, then finally mozzarella.
Take the baking sheet out of the oven (being careful not to burn yourself) and place your bread halves onto the baking sheet. Use a spatula, or whatever else works for you. You're going to bake for about 18 minutes, maybe a few minutes more. Monitor how the cheese looks, you want the cheese to brown and start bubbling (but obviously not to burn).
When it's time, take the baking sheet from the oven. Take one of the bread halves and reverse it onto the other one to make your grilled cheese sandwich. Take the sandwich off the baking sheet and onto a plate or wire rack to cool (you're looking at about 10 minutes to cool).
Cut the bread down the middle. Wait another 5 minutes or so then cut each piece again down the middle (cut more if you need to make more pieces for your guests). You're grilled cheese should be ready to go.
