Recipe for Black Bean Burger (Vegan)
If you're looking for a burger in vegan or vegetarian form, a black bean burger is a great choice and can turn out to be truly delicious. Here is a great recipe for a black bean burger that you are sure to enjoy. The black bean burger is my personal favorite of the no-meat burgers. The seasoning here is especially important and can make or break your burger.
Let's go over the ingredients you'll need: - black beans, drained (14 ounces) - all-purpose flour (1/2 cup) - crumbled bread (2 slices) - olive oil (2 tablespoons) - 2 heirloom tomatoes, sliced - lettuce - half a chopped onion - half red onion, sliced - onion powder (1 teaspoon) - seasoning salt (half teaspoon) - garlic powder (1 teaspoon) - cracked black pepper |
Get the ingredients, properly measured, together. Take a large bowl and add your beans. Mash the beans in the bowl with fork or some other masher like a potato masher. Stir thoroughly once you have the beans sufficiently mashed.
Take a frying pan or skillet and add about half a tablespoon of your olive oil to oil the pan. Now you're going to add the regular (non red) onions and saute them for about 4 minutes. You want to saute them until they are softened up.
Transfer the sauteed onions into the bowl with the mashed beans and combine them. At this point you're also going to add the crumbled bread, as well as the onion powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, and pepper (all the seasonings basically). Mix everything completely with a large spoon or your favorite mixing tool.
Now add the flour a bit at a time (in increments of a couple tablespoons). The mix is going to be thick at this point, so get ready to knead the mix with your hands to get the flour mixed in. Things will be mixed and firmed up after about 3 minutes of doing this.
Roll up some of the mixture and then flatten. You're looking to make 5-7 patties that are about half an inch thick.
Use the rest of the olive oil and add it to the pan. Set your heat to medium-low and add the black bean patties. You'll want to cook on both sides, about 3 minutes total. You want the heat to be low enough that the patties cook thoroughly by the time the outsides have browned.
Now you can place the patties on the burger and put everything together for serving.
There are lots of variations you can do with the black bean burger. For one thing, you can substitute in lots of different kinds of other canned beans. Consider using red beans, kidney beans, or even black-eyed peas.
You can add different veggies to the black bean mixture, for different flavors/textures. Add a half cup of red or green peppers, or grated carrots or celery. You'll add these vegetables in with the onions and saute them all together in the earlier step.
Experiment with seasoning mixtures as a substitute for the seasoning salt to liven up flavors on that sides of things. You can also experiment with adding herbs to the mixture, like parsley, cilantro, sage, oregano, or any other herb that strikes your fancy. Don't be afraid to experiment once you've mastered the base recipe.
