Guide for Making a Ham and Cheese Omelet
There are few cooking skills as classic as being able to cook a good omelet. It would be difficult to call yourself a chef or an experienced cook without being able to cook an omelet. Maybe you'd like to become a better cook, or maybe you just want to know how to make a delicious omelet for yourself. Either way, this recipe for a ham and cheese omelet should have you covered.
Even the ingredient list itself is simple enough: - ham pieces (half cup) - eggs (3, preferably free range) - cheddar cheese (3/4 cup) - unsalted butter (a tablespoon) - black pepper - kosher salt |
Have your ingredients properly measured and ready to go. First, toss the butter into your skillet or pan and heat on medium heat. Add in the pieces of ham so that they can cook for about 4 minutes.
Take a small bowl and crack the eggs into it. Mix the egg mixture lightly with your fork. It's really important that you don't whisk the eggs. Now slowly pour in the eggs into the skillet over the ham. Take your fork and slowly mix the eggs. As you do this, the eggs will cook and begin to set. When this happens, add the cheddar cheese and stop stirring.
At this point, give the omelet about a minute to continue to cook as the cheese melts. Add a bit of salt and black pepper. Now take your spatula and fold the omelet over, but only go about two thirds of the way.
Make sure you have a warmed plate ready to go. Tip the skillet over and let the omelet roll over onto the plate with a little help from the spatula, so that the point where you folded the omelet is actually facing down. You'll want to serve the omelet as soon as possible.
If you're thinking you'd like to go in a vegetarian direction for your omelet, the following is a bonus bell pepper omelet for you to try out.
The ingredients are:
- 4 large eggs
- half a medium onion (diced)
- half a red bell pepper (diced)
- half a green bell pepper (diced)
- olive oil (1 tablespoon)
- unsalted butter (1 tablespoon)
- black pepper, kosher salt
Use a medium bowl and crack the eggs into them. Add the pepper and salt, along with any other seasonings you want. Use a fork to beat then set aside.
Now heat your skillet or frying pan on medium heat and use your olive oil. Saute the diced onion for around 4 minutes. Add your green bell peppers and red bell peppers and cook for about 3 or 4 minutes. You want the peppers to be a bit tender by the time the cooking is done. You can shut off the heat at this point.
Let your veggies and onions cool for a couple minutes, then add to your bowl of eggs. Wipe down the skillet or use another skillet and put back on medium low heat. Add your butter and coat the pan with it as it melts. Pour in the eggs + veggies mix. Let the omelet cook until the bottom is set (but don't let it brown).
Use your spatula to fold the omelet in half and then you're going to slide it onto a (preferably warm) plate. You are ready to enjoy your vegetarian omelet.
